ALICE PAUL PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN WOMEN'S RIGHTS MOVEMENT A CENTURY AGO
Alice Paul (1885-1977) dedicated her entire life to securing equal rights for all women. While other suffragettes retired after the enactment of the 19th amendment in 1920 giving women the right to vote, Alice continued introducing The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) stating, "Men and women shall have equal rights throughout the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction". The ERA was introduced to every Congress from 1923 until it was passed in 1972. When it was rewritten in 1943, it was named the Alice Paul Amendment and the new language read, "Equality of rights under the law will not be denied or abridged by the United States ir any other state on account of sex."
