The National Women's History Project (NWHP) and Women's Resource Center recognizes Black History Month in February and honors the African-American women who have made major contributions to our nation's history including: Shirley Chisholm, US Representative and social activist; Lawyer and Judge Constance Baker Motley; Olympic Champion Wilma Rudolph; Mae Jemison, Astronaut; Nina Simone, Jazz Singer and Composer; Writer-Educator Dorothy West; Dancer and Entertainer Josephine Baker; Zora Hurston, Anthropologist and Folklorist; Jocelyn Elders, US Surgeon General and Ma Rainey, Pioneer Blues Vocalist are just a few of the remarkable African-American women who strongly influenced advances in law, medicine, politics, science, civil rights and arts and entertainment.
